RAID Usage Tips
Our engineers recommend the following when working with RAID systems:
- Never replace a failed drive with a drive that was part of another RAID, and always zero out replacement drives before using them in your system
- If a drive is making unusual clicking, ticking or grinding noises, turn it off immediately and do not attempt to reboot
- Have a validated backup before making any hardware or software changes
- Clearly label all drives with their position in the RAID array
- Never run volume repair utilities on suspected bad drives
- Never run defragmenter utilities on suspected bad drives
- In cases of power-loss, if the file system looks suspicious, is un-mountable, or the data is inaccessible when power is restored, do not run volume repair utilities
Attempting to recover a RAID without an experienced data recovery specialist can put your critical data at further risk. When hardware malfunction is a component of the problem, permanent destruction of data can occur with failed recovery attempts.
